Oral communication 2008 Day 4 - Picture discussion

1.What is happening in the picture?
Who are they? What are they doing? Where are they?
A group of people from the same company going out on an outing with their colleagues. Some of their colleagues are on wheelchairs and they have catered a wheelchair friendly bus to bring them to their destination. The tags around the necks of the people probably are used for identification purposes as the function may be one that involve other departments of the companies as well. They are all prepared and are carrying bags of items that they are likely to use for the journey. Some have paper bags, like the lady just behind the man helping his colleague up the bus, while others prefer using haversacks like the man in the background with a moustache. They are all patiently waiting to get on the bus and allow their colleagues, on wheelchair to get on first. One of the ladies is leaning against the bus. She is probably tired as they may have to meet very early, at the company, to go for such outing. She may not be especially keen in such outdoor activities. The man, in the bus, is probably the bus driver. He had come over to help the man on the wheelchair up the steep ramp. His fellow colleague is also helping him up by pushing the wheelchair as the man is rather big size.

2.Pick one person and describe what he/she is thinking about.
Man in the wheelchair/ Man in the bus, bus-driver/ helping him to get on the bus/ lady in the background
The man on the wheelchair looks helpless and he may be thinking that it is such a bother to travel. He wears a stern look on his face. However, he maybe glad that with this specially designed bus, people on wheelchair are now more mobile and can travel around. On the contrary, the lady, in the background, has a grin plastered on her face. She seems very happy to be able to go for such an outing, which is often difficult to come about because of their mobility issue. She must be thankful that the company had made such an arrangement for her. The bus driver seems very experienced and is more than willing to help. He could have done this several time and had been trained to handle such situations. The confident look on his face, reassures the man on the wheelchair that he is in good hands.

3.What do you think will happen after this?
All of them would have boarded the bus and probably they will be seated in such a way that their colleagues on wheelchair will have a partner for the journey. They will have a guide on the bus to explain to them what they can expect for the field trip and also to build up the atmosphere for the activities to come. They are likely to join the colleagues from the other departments once they reach their destination where the activities for the rest of the day will commence. Hopefully everyone will be included in the planned activities and everyone can be better bonded and get to know one another better.
